Canals and rivers often suffer from high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus, the primary drivers of toxic algal blooms. By integrating photobioreactors and passive algal "skid" systems along these waterways, we can intercept these nutrients at the source. As algae thrive on the nutrients in the water, they simultaneously scrub carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at rates far exceeding land-based forests. This transforms urban canal-sides into high-density carbon sinks, contributing to local net-zero targets while improving air quality in densely populated areas.
By deploying algae-based buffers at estuaries and discharge points, we prevent the "dead zones" that threaten marine biodiversity. This coastal remediation protects vital shellfish beds and seagrass meadows, restoring the natural balance of our shores.
