Mersea Farming is redefining this legacy. We view these ponds not as "waste sites," but as dormant reservoirs of value. By deploying specialised, acidophilic algae systems, we are moving beyond containment and toward a future of active biogenic recovery.
Legacy tailings, such as those found in copper and gold mining districts like Geamăna, often suffer from extreme acidity (AMD) and high concentrations of transition metals. Our approach utilises acid-tolerant and acidophilic micro algae that thrive in pH levels as low as 2.0. These organisms act as high precision filters, actively sequestering copper, iron and rare earth elements through bio-sorption and intracellular accumulation, preventing toxic seepage into the wider watershed.
Unlike chemical neutralisers that offer a temporary fix, algae provide a self-regulating solution. As they photosynthesise, they naturally influence the pH of their environment, reducing the toxicity of the water while simultaneously scrubbing carbon dioxide from the air. This turns a source of ecological risk into a high-density carbon sink, aligning industrial remediation with global climate targets.
